About Megan Scallan
Historian & Curator
With over fifteen years of professional experience as a Historian and Curator, Megan has worked in contemporary and fine art museums, historic house museums and sites, historical societies, maritime museums, and other non-profits across the eastern seaboard. She provides high quality historical research, fine art support services, educational programming, and exhibitions to museums, historical societies, historic sites and house museums, artists, and private clients.
As Director of the Weeden House Museum, Megan restored Alabama’s oldest house museum back to the mid-19th century. While Curator and Collections Manager for the Duxbury Rural & Historical Society, Megan participated in a multi-year project to preserve the structural integrity of the Bradford House. She created a tour program and exhibition re-invigorating the family history, focusing on the Bradford daughters and their incredible lives. In June 2018, the Duxbury Rural & Historical Society received an Award of Merit (Leadership in History Award) from the American Association of State and Local History (AASLH), for the project to “Re-imagine Bradford.”
Megan’s academic research focuses on the connections between gender, national identity, and material cultural (the study of goods, objects, and the built environment particularly focusing on practices of consumption, trade, and the intimacies of daily life). Her work demonstrates how objects, distributions of remains, and spatial configurations all contribute to our understanding of the past. Megan has presented her research at a number of conferences across the United States and Europe, including the American Historical Association and the Bavarian American Academy.
Herbalist
Megan’s interests in the history of medicine started in undergraduate and grew into a passion in the years since. She continued her studies outside the classroom as she delved into books on early modern midwifery in Great Britain and Ireland and nursing during the Great War. Her fascination turned to herbal medicine and at-home herbal remedies after years of battling chronic illness. With the intention of finding alternatives to traditional Western medicine which was only making her more sick, she turned to acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Through a combination of acupuncture, TCM, and physical therapy, Megan regained control over her health and overall well-being. Inspired by the success of herbal remedies came a deepening curiosity in all things plant related.
Mossfire Apothecary is the result of years of research, experiments, and exploration into the world of herbalism. Herbalism is truly about the human-plant connection. It’s an ever-evolving relationship to not only understand the “medicinal value” in herbs but to understand them in the greater context of the natural world and the interrelation of plants and human activity. It is in this journey of discovery that Megan’s love for the plants will help lead you down your own unique path. Each item is individually crafted with your health in mind.
